The Professor, Brian Barnaby

Brian Barnaby was a man known for his sharp intellect and inquisitive nature. Even as a child, he'd never been satisfied with simple answers. "Why" and "how" were integral parts of his vocabulary. They'd carried him from the splintered halls of Mother Mary's Orphanage all the way to storied Cambridge, and further beyond into the realm of the Unknown.Having grown bored and rather complacent within his career teaching at the very University he had attended, Brian began to search for more. At first, his adventures were rather local. He'd investigate sightings of ghosts in the park, of ancient treasure beneath the city, of whatever rumor hit his ears. It was fun for a while, but not enough to shake the fear of stillness and stagnation that had been building inside him. When he'd spotted an advert in his local newspaper, he knew that he couldn't pass up the opportunity. The Orient Express, as it had been dubbed, was a brand new, world class locomotive preparing to embark on a globetrotting adventure. Ticket holders would be given the opportunity to see every corner of the globe, with stops in more countries than Brian could name. He knew he had to be on board when it left London, and so he was. Armed with nothing but a bag of scientific tools and papers, he was going to have his adventure.
Basil Ashford, The Soldier

You may have heard the phrease "an heir and a spare," spoken in regard to the children of wealthy families. Alfred and Basil Ashford were born to fulfill these roles, their first initials denoting their position as elder and younger brothers. Unlike most families, though, Basil was not given the same freedoms as other second-sons. He truly was treated as a spare, kept safe and away from the outside world for fear that he'd need to step into his brother's place. This fear had seemed to be unfounded, with Alfred's eventual marriage and procreation affording Basil the opportunity to leave London, seeing the world as a member of His Majesty's armed forces. He'd served dutifully for many years, obtaining the rank of Major during the conflict with France beneath Napoleon, before effectively retiring to a quiet life in the countryside. Unfortunately, though, Basil was unable to enjoy peace for very long.Tragedy struck, claiming the lives of his brother and nephew and forcing him to to take his place as head of the Ashford estate. It was not a position that he desired to be in, but as a good soldier, he would do his duty without complaint.Basil's horror begins soon after his reintroduction to London's high society. His position as a familiar stranger has given him a unique perspective in regard to his peers, one that has allowed him to notice the cracks in the delicately crafted veneer of normalcy. There are wicked things in London, ritualistic serpents hiding amongst delicate lace, and Major Ashford will not find peace until his saber punctures the heart of the hydra.
Frank Townsend, The Detective

As a boy, Francis Townsend had been obsessed with his grandfather's stories of Wild West outlaws and the honorable lawmen who brought them to justice. He dreamed of being one of those brave men, a US Marshal riding atop his trusty steed with a gun on his hip and a badge on his chest. By the time of his 30th birthday, he'd became something close. As a police officer, he'd sworn to protect the innocent and bring the wicked to justice, just like the men in his grandfather's stories. The only issue was that officers like him were few and far between.By the time he'd made Detective, Frank had grown disillusioned with the badge. He'd seen too much corruption, too many men willing to turn a blind eye for the sake of a dollar, or out of some misguided loyalty. Their titles became fuel for their egos, and he hated the sight of it. Frank was only days away from quitting when he'd noticed something strange in his city. Things were quiet, unnaturally peaceful. As a closeted gay man in an era where such a thing was so highly frowned upon, Frank was quite familiar with the city's hidden nightlife. He knew things, saw things that no one else would, and he noticed when peculiarities began to rear their heads. People had been disappearing, leaving the night's streets devoid. His coworkers brushed it off. Many of them didn't care what happened, viewing it as a positive thing that so-called "undesirables" were gone. Detective Townsend wasn't so willing to ignore it, though, and he was determined to solve this rash of disappearances, no matter the cost.
Arturo Méndez, The Scientist

For his seventh birthday, young Arti Méndez was given a Junior Scientist's Experiment Kit. It wasn't a particularly expensive or extensive thing, consisting mostly of child friendly science projects that could be built in the average kitchen. Still, though, it was a precious and wonderful thing to little Arturo. The potato alarm clocks and baking soda volcanos he'd built sparked a life-long passion for science that would lead him to great heights.Physics and engineering were always his favorite subjects. He liked to toy around with electronics and tools, to take them apart and put them back together even better than he’d found them. Tinkering lead to invention, and soon enough he was being recognized for his advancements in scientific technology. This recognition brought opportunity, and when given the chance to work on a top secret project, Arti couldn’t pass it up. The excitement of something mysterious and clandestine would eventually give way to the horror of the impossible but, oddly enough, he didn’t quite mind it. In fact, he found his job dealing with the paranormal and preternatural to be rather enjoyable most days.
